A little sliver of afternoon sunlight streamed in through the open door…Alice opened it a little further.
“Afraid of the dark, Meal?” Amadeus breathed on the back of her neck, smacking his lips.
Alice whirled around. It was Amadeus all right! Shadows played across his face, making him look surprisingly sinister.
“Where is Vitruvius when you need him, Meal?” he asked. His voice was barely above a whisper.
Alice didn’t know what to say, and her very survival depended on her next words.
“He’s upstairs in one of the rooms. He’ll be down in just a few minutes,” she lied nervously.
“Do not lie to me, Meal. I know he’s not here, and that means you’re in big trouble.”
