Heather Payer-Smith shares, "It was an interesting challenge to illustrate My Vampire Cousin. With the printing deadline quickly approaching when I was brought on to do illustrations, and editing still in full swing, I was not able to read the full story prior to creating the illlustrations. Instead I was given snippets from the book that pertained to the scene the author and editor wanted to highlight with an illustration. I was given great direction, but you can imagine, at times, I was still thinking 'what on earth!?!?' Ha ha. It wasn't until the book was released that I got to read the whole story and see what happened between each illustration."
J. K. Hawkins shares, "When my publisher told me she'd found an illustrator for My Vampire Cousin, I must say I was pretty nervous. I wanted to make sure my characters looked how they were supposed to look. The first illustration we received was of Vitruvius, and I was surprised at how accurately he was drawn. It was like she'd pulled the image right out of my mind. Haha! I didn't actually meet Heather until the first book signing right after the books were published. Every illustration captures the moment just how I imagined it. Thanks, Heather!"

Heather Payer-Smith shares, "For My Werewolf Brothers, I wanted to step the illustrations up a notch - to continue to challenge myself as an illustrator. I was thrilled when the editor told me that each illustration would be given almost a full page. I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to add more details to the scenery and background, as well as explore with different methods of presenting the scene. I feel that as the series progresses, the characters become more defined for the readers and that the illustrations need to reflect that."
J. K. Hawkins shares, "I was really excited and ready to get the illustrations as soon as the book was completed. Knowing how well Heather draws my characters, I couldn't wait to see how she would depict the werewolf brothers. I especially couldn't wait to see Burt, the Big Bad Wolf. Each illustration exceeded my expectations. I didn't know, after seeing how well the Vampire Cousin illustrations were done, that Heather could draw even better. But she did!"
